Sorry, been kind of busy handling some stuff for school lately. Haven't had that much time to comment on too much of stuff.

Quote1. Pirates being piratey. You can't deny that they have a panache, a style, a certain swashbuckling flair. Pirates self centered and don't give a rat's brings about anyone else.

Oh yes, I really hope we get some fun characters from both sides of the categories. Fun pirates are a must and they certainly need that flair.

QuotePirates should be swashbuckling, not lame and whiny.

I'm fairly certain you would have hated one of my other characters then XD

Quote2. CANNONS! PISTOLS! EXPLOSIONS!!!!!!!! There's a certain scope and epicness that the modern (by Redwall standards) weapons give to sea battle. The sheer brutality gives a desperation to it that ensures each fight will be a fight to the death. There is no quarter given: Either blast your enemy ship to pieces or sink to the bottom of the sea with yours. Every fight is fight tooth and claw to the bitter end. That's not, of course, to discredit the old fashioned way of hand to hand hacking. Ideally, it would be a nice mix of the two for the perfect battle. Imagine Pirates of the Caribbean.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a pipe dream of mine given the language of the contest so far. Words like "mace" and "spear" and "slave driver" give this a rather "classic" Redwall vibe.

Yeah, I'm sorry to say that this is probably true. Despite how awesome some of that sounds, I'm really wanting to stick to the classic Redwall vibe, and, while this contest's world has finally started developing civilization and towns around the coast as well as creating currency, it's not yet at that point to gaining that kind of technology and weaponry.

Quote3. Lastly, most of all, I want to see some Racism.

I think this is usually a given in most contests. Especially this one, seeing as Atlas has basically destroyed a pirate empire.

When Vin talked about racism, I'm thinking he is describing the relationship between woodlanders and vermin.  There has been a continual animosity between these two classification.  There is some between certain woodlanders, but it's more a grudging thing, such as between hares and all other woodlanders when it comes to fighting.

I do admit I've had an idea regarding the term "vermin."  I'm sure it's seen as an insulting term.  I've been working on a fan fiction where the vermin have a similar insulting term for woodlanders.  Not sure it is relevant, but if anyone does ask, I'll post both the insulting term and the reason behind it.
In life, the only thing that ever adds up is a column of numbers.

This is what I was referring to as well. Whether in the books or in these contests, species conflicts tend to happen often, and I was merely saying that I'd expect it to be even more racist between woodlanders and vermin in the current era, seeing as how the goodbeasts just killed all the vermin pirates. I'd imagine the pirates wouldn't be too happy with woodlanders about that, and that the woodlanders might hold some form of elitism over them, similar to how the books already portray the conflict between them.
