Royal hares are rarely seen in the Steppes— so rarely, indeed, that many question their very existence. Standing a head taller than biggest specimens of other species of hare, with a magnificant crown of pronged antlers, royal hares are treated by the beasts of all clans with awe and respect. But with awe comes expectation— the beasts of the south often look to these magnificent creatures for guidance in times of crisis.

Kango, like most clansbeasts, was raised with iron on his wrists. The tribe of Gila had subjugated the lands of the South for generations, maintaining power from a great stone fortress that had once been, long ago, the home of the High King. Gash Gila, the leader of the tribe, was vicious and cruel. He constantly tortured and killed slaves for his own amusement, and his family was just as brutal.

But Kango always knew that nature itself had gifted him his crown for a reason. He knew that he was never born to be a slave. Under cover of darkness, he emptied the slave pens of Gash's fortress, leading them in their fight to escape. Together, they disappeared into the sagebrush. The beasts who survived that night became the very first members of the Ring, and indeed it was indeed that night that Kango earned a new name: Chainbreaker. The Ring proceeded to wage a violent, bloody guerrilla war against the lizards. Finally, after seasons of struggle, Kango and his followers sacked the Gila fortress and drove Gash and its kin back into the dark recesses of the southern canyons.

It has been ten seasons since, but still remnants of Gila rule echo throughout the land. Kango has left the clans to their devices and fervently leads the Ring across the Steppes, the desert, and the canyons in an effort to expunge any traces of lizard influence. But the clans are growing increasingly worried in the face of natural disaster. They cry for a leader, and declare that Kango must once again live up to the promise of his crown.
