I don't think it's a case of right or wrong; it's just something people are struggling with.

On the other writing site, there are a lot of flash fiction stories.  If you read a lot of them, you'll see how to fit a detailed story in the fewest words.  Like anything else, it takes practice getting it right.  To paraphrase, the devil is in the edits.

I don't have any more to add to the current discussion, but a question on apps in general, again. A bit like the question I asked in "Welcome!" but it seems to fit better here.

Wot if BOTH someone's apps get chosen by the judges? Will they be allowed to choose which one gets in, then? Or will Tara be the one deciding between them, as she's the only one who will know that both are by the same person?

I'm betting in that unlikely event, they will select the character they prefer for the contest and another character chosen.  Since the selection process is private, I'm sure their list will rank all the applications.  So if your two are numbers 3 and 8, the number 8 one will be dropped and the successful canidates will be 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 9 - 10.

Oh, blagh, didn't think of that. XP Of course ... we ranked 'em somewhat like that in TED ... Tsk! I was hoping for one last chance to (if I get chosen at all!) get my preferred one in. *chitters*

Yeah, I think only if there's a tie between the two and the judges simply can't choose one over the other, then I might ask the author which one they want to write more. But Cairn's theory is correct. For now though, only I know which apps are by the same author. :P

Rats. I guess I can kiss the second application that I personally love more than (but lacks the flow and style of) the other one goodbye.  :'(

Hmm, I wouldn't necessarily say that. Sometimes you can think an app not as good as another, but the judges will love it, and vice versa. Again, going back to all the times peoples' painstaking creations got beaten out by their last-minute scribbles. You just never know. :P

Cricket Argyll

Cricket was a scribble and I really didn't like her compared to my other "more fun" apps in Stumpy and Adrian, but she's the one that got in and after some soul-searching (read: harsher critiques) the little curmudgeon started to grow on me. *pets Cricky* She even had some character growth that I really wasn't expecting considering she's an evil little (b)ratty. >=D

...however, I know very well neither of mine will be getting in. :D

Ulrick Hammerpaw

When I entered for RV3 I sent in a weasel that I'd spent ages developing a character for, and a bird that I wrote in 15 minutes right before the deadline. Somehow the weasel didn't make the 30, but the bird did, where it was deservedly savaged for being a pretty bad rush job! XD

H'come it's always the second one that's the rush job? Why not rush the first then spend oodles of time on the second? Maybe yer luck'll change then. XD

Well, that's what happened to me in MM.  Well, kinda-sorta.  You see, Biara was the first app that I wrote and finished and I liked her well enough, but I had another idea very close to the end that I worked on for a while and was really banking on (and was, funnily enough, the only cat to be sent in during the original application period).  I was a little miffed when she wasn't chosen, but then again I'm glad I got to write for Biara, so it all worked out in the end.

It never fails to amuse me how so often it's the case that the 20 minute app gets in instead of the two week one.
May you live in interesting times.

Stonewall

I still don't know how Obadiah made the cut in the RV4 thirty. I suspect there were secretly only three vole apps.  ;)

Well, here's hoping. My first app was written in about an hour on one of my breaks between classes. My second app... has the species and name nailed down. I've got three different pieces written up for it, but I don't know which one to choose. (Yeah. I'm definitely going to be one of those annoying ones who submit just on the deadline...)

So I'm going to get one of my (non-ROC) friends to read them and give me advice...
