Well, the general furriness is cute, but Nivard most certainly is not.
You know, I just realized it's a lot easier to feel sympathetic to characters that are cute and fuzzy as opposed to human.  :P

Sorry it upsets you, Syc, but in a way, that's a compliment. As Revel said, this picture is supposed to show a bad relationship. My heart broke just a little in Revel's post when she thought that Nivard's abuse was love. It's just disgusting and upsetting. Like this picture was meant to be. Sure, they're fuzzy and cute, but I'm a little perturbed by the 'rofl' comment, to be honest. No offense Erethas... ^^;

Well, I'll admit when I first glanced at the picture I thought they were just posing together, making  tough faces at the camera; an "us-against-the-world" type deal. So I thought of it as an idealistic little non-canon bonus, a wouldn't-it-be-nice-if. Or maybe even Revel's perception of their relationship.

Then I read everyone else's comments, looked at the pic again, and sort of: "...oh." :(

Maybe Erethas' instinctive interpretation was similar to mine?

Haha.  Too true, too true.  There are plenty of characters, Nallmian included, who would come across as completely unsympathetic and evil if they weren't cute and furry. 

But yes, it's true that Nivard and Revel's "relationship," such as it is, is a decidedly abusive, messed up one.  It is obvious to everybody else, or at least to the audience, that this is a terrible relationship, and yet Revel doesn't seem to see it that way.  I wonder if that is a function of Revel being more feral/wild than a typical Redwallian stoat, or a function of Revel's personality, or just that she doesn't seem to have much to compare it to.  Either way, even being a mustelid is not enough to get Nivard off the hook on this one.

but it doesn't work well at all in text and isn't obvious. For example occasionally I call my rabbit vicious and ferocious, which he isn't at all - he is quite the opposite. No offense taken.

...then again, I could be the only one whose brain automatically framed the pic in a much rosier light? I mean just, like, squint. Do you sort of see how his off camera arm could be inferred to be leaning casually against the wall, and instead of being knocked backward she's just sort of... whirling around dramatically? And they're both making snarly faces because they want to look all cool and vermin-y and don't-mess-with-us.

I don't know. My mind is a strange instrument, sometimes. :(

Oh, I had been wondering whether or not Reveal had been slapped by the way she's grimacing and standing. But on the other hand, it looks like Nirvard is just pointing as if to say "Leave now, in that direction," and is immensely annoyed with her.

It could be! Revel's tunic didn't rip until Deadtail's post, so this could be a future shot of them together. Maybe Mattukhana is standing behind Revel, so Nivard didn't hit her at all and she's just cringing because she expects it?

*gives Nivard hugs* I think his fuzziness is enough to keep him off the hook... Revel did hurt him before he smacked her. Doesn't anyone get mad when their puppy plays too rough and they've had a bad day at school or work?

No, not at all. No one, unless their heart is nil, can resist fuzziness, and puppy eyes. Or rabbit fuzziness, in my case.

Well, now that I've revealed, I feel comfortable posting this. I drew it half-way through the contest after Damask and I had had a conversation about what Freyr was like/looked like. Bell goes for the 'pleasantly plump' sort in her guys. Jarrtail, I'll sketch up Greenfang tomorrow during one of the breaks between classes, 'cos you've been a trooper!
