Yes, but the problem with not posting until the end of the week meant that all my lovely NPCs would have already been introduced by everyone else...and so would pretty much everything else, actually. Which...would basically render my entire prologue utterly pointless, and all the work I put into writing it would basically have been for nothing. And as it was the one post I get to make in the competition, I put my foot down. Because I'm the boss and I can. :P

See, I guess I just assumed that you weren't going to spend all week getting there (for starters, I had no idea how you'd even manage to stretch it out that long), and that it'd be by the end of the first round of posts, tops. But apparently I was mistaken. XD

Strange, Tara, because I recall you saying this in another thread:

Quotethey were going to spend the entire week or so just getting to the present, and I think it really could've been done a lot more quickly (which I did at least try to encourage, so don't blame me! Tongue).

Opal

....Yeaah. Don't get the point you're trying to make here. I said "encourage." Not "force." Had I forced them, it would've been within the first round of posts that they'd gotten through the prologue.

Did you also catch when Bellona said this?

QuoteWe had planned on reaching the Oasis by the end of Week One regardless of what the reviewers were saying, m'am. There was just a bit of poor execution as those of us at the end of the line were rushing those ahead to come up with something so we could all get a second post in before the deadline. I would ask the voters to show some mercy, then, to folks like Sue and Venril who, as Captain Ashpaw pointed out, got the short end of the stick there.

I never said "hey guys, if you're not at the oasis by the end of week one you're all DEADZORZ." I never gave any sort of firm date they absolutely had to be there. I made suggestions, but I'm not going to write the story for them. That was their planning and it just kind of went awry this time. It happens sometimes when you're writing a story with eight other people over the intarwebs. The last few posters did sort of get hosed this week because while there were a ton of filler posts on the ship where they focused solely on character development, suddenly the last few were expected to do ALL of the plot progression the others got to skip out on and probably had to sacrifice a lot of character development in the process.

So, as I also said before, "don't blame me! :P"

And also, as Bellona said, don't vote for someone for the sole purpose of messing up the timeline. A little mercy would be nice.

I understand some people got the short end of the stick, but really, it's how they handled it.
And then he DIED!!!

Thank you for the review, Ashira, though I'm afraid I can't take full credit for three posts. More like 2 and 1/3 as the Interlude: The Broad Stream was written by me, Damask, and Deadtail together. I only posted it because I'm the one who copied over and edited it from the AIM chat we used to write it. I'm glad you enjoyed my last post, but could you tell me just what you found suspect about the waterfall? Was it the fact that we didn't notice it earlier and avoid it? Or the fact that it exists? Because it's Tara you should blame for the existence of the waterfall into the Oasis pool. She made it. I only took advantage. ;P

Yes, let's blame Tara for all our short-fallings.

Just kidding, Bellie, I love you!

What I meant when I found it a little suspect is that half your crew died and it's just incredibly hard to gauge.  Actually, that's one thing I've been curious about while reading your fics.

You made a bunch of NPCs, Martin's Shadow, and then you keep killing them off.  I understand that we're supposed to be seeing a realistic side of a fight, are the recruits that ill-fit?

Whatever.  Not a big deal.

Damask the Minstrel

Well, they are kids. I wouldn't expect them to be a whole lot of use...

Sparrowhawk

Well they've been run ragged - they've been fleeing almost nonstop from Nashald with little time for rest/recuperation, and they just went over a waterfall straight into another battle against troops far more numerous and prepared than they.

Also, sure, what Damask said.

Eliza, while the character interaction is good, the fact that you didn't move anywhere was bad.  It seems that you got stuck with a sorta dreadful filler post.  Dialogue isn't always bad, certainly, and with something like a contest, sometimes you really can't do anything but chatter.  This particular posting order did you a disservice, I think.

*nods*

Thank you very much for the review, Madame Ferret!

However, I should admit that I wasn't stuck with the brig post, I chose to take it. I thought it would be a good opportunity to show a different side of Eliza's personality, and expand her personality beyond the angst. I also wanted to establish some relationships with other characters, so that future interactions would be possible.

I guess I really didn't do that as effectively as I could have, and in a way, that's good. Gives me something to work on, and now I know what sort of circumstances to avoid, right?

And all that's best of dark and bright
meet in her aspect and her eyes...

Totally still working on the RV5 epilogue, I swear...

Ashira

Well, I definitely don't hate you. ^^  You're still somewhere in my top 3 and I think your writing is great, and I certainly figured that you were getting in some character interaction.  I don't know, this just wasn't the most stimulating post, but it was interesting to see a little more to Eliza.  I'm definitely glad she's not just angst.

Opal

Er, sorry if I came across as a bit snippy earlier, everyone. Today's just been horrible all around. I got laid off suddenly from work for no good reason. Unless you count the fact that my now ex-boss's wife has him totally whipped and her loser father needed my job for a month. My part time dishwashing job. What a classy old geezer. Oh and my ex-boss made up some story about me being wasteful and incompetent (even though pretty much up until this weekend he was always like "Oh you're such a hard worker! You're way better than the last dishwasher we had! Thank you! OMG!") and he didn't even have the decency to tell me to my face, but got my brother (who is a chef there) to tell me instead. And, y'know, with the job market the way it is, and the fact that English BAs are worth about as much as used toilet paper these days, and the fact that my husband still hasn't gotten his work permit, I've just been a teeeensy bit stressed about it is all.

So. It's nothing personal.

To all reviewers, past and present, thank you! I don't always find something to say in reply to each reviewer but I do my best to read them and will take their advice as best I can. You are appreciated!

Sorry, Tara. We all have bad days. Besides, I think you're way too smart for a part-time dishwashing job anyway. C'mon, if you're half as smart as you appear on here, then you deserve at least to be president.  :)
