Huh, fascinating. I really do love the idea, and would love to see it tried again in a future contest. Now, how was this actually supposed to look? Were the Top 30 expected to write full-on narrative bits for worldbuilding? Or did they hash out details about where their character is/what they'd be doing, and then leave the narrative prose for the Top 10 once they reached those parts of the story? Easier way of phrasing it would be: was it more of an Audience RP, or simply a way to influence/alter the NPC/world conflict within the story?

And why those authors? Just solid writers? Dependable?

Realized I hadn't said hello yet. Silly foxy.

Welcome, newbies!

Welcome back, dusty old farts!

Good to see such a lovely turn out. : )

So I made a thread and then realized I never really re(?)introduced myself. I'm Robert, writer in MO III and long-time Survivor contest lurker. I don't talk much on the boards and....might not still? Who knows, I may surprise myself ;D But at any rate, I'm excited for the new contest, and looking forward to either being one of the lucky few to write in it, or at least read and vote. I love me the nail-biting uncertainty over who lives or dies in these things  ;)

Shoot. Super late to the game here, but... my name's Fenrir. Longtime lurker, this is only my second time posting in the forums. Been a fan of the redwall survivor stories for a while now and (sort of) trying to get more involved recently. It looks like I missed yet another contest LOL.

A little about me: My favorite Redwall books are Mossflower, Mattimeo, Sable Quean & Taggerung. Back in the day I used to write fanfiction and would peruse the Redwall category quite frequently. But as for right now, I'm writing my own work that will hopefully be published in the near future.

Very cool getting to meet all of the masterminds behind the characters!

Hey, Fenrir, welcome back :)

Don't worry, there's bound to be more contests in the near future that you can take part in. Until then, I hope you enjoy the story that the writers are putting out right now. It'd be lovely to hear another beast's thoughts :)

Hi there, Fenrir! What a pleasure to see a new face around here (again!). You say you've been a long time fan--which contests have you read before? And did you have any particular favorite characters?

Great to hear you're striking out and writing your own works now. Wish you the best of luck with that! What particular genre is it in, and as a follow-up, what drew you to writing in that genre?

I first discovered Redwall Survivor in early 2014 through Midnight Mossflower. Following up on that I finished Emperor's Decree II, then read only a quarter of Midnight Mossflower 2, and then read through Mossflower Odyssey III over time as it was uploaded every now and again onto FF.net. I still need to go back through the archives and check out the other survivor competitions!

As for favorite character, I was a big fan of Nallmian & Desmond in MM1. Regarding Emperor's II, Seth was pretty cool. MOIII, my favorite was probably Crue and Tooley but I really enjoyed all the POV characters that time around! A well written cast for sure. It was very hard watching some of them die.

Fantasy! By far my favorite genre. The story is in the same vein as Redwall; talking animals in an early time period setting. It's funny you ask what drew me to writing for that genre. I would have to thank Narnia, LOTR and Redwall for giving me the inspiration to create something of my own.

You and me both! I really should read some more of the contests as well. I've read through Midnight Mossflower and some of the (very) old Questor's Bolds, but I've heard very good things about the first Mossflower Odyssey. Super cool that you saw us through the FF and found your way over here., though. =D

Nallmian was the bomb. I have no idea how he got voted off. Probably my favorite Survivor character to date.

Daww. *blushes* Well thankee, mate. That's awful humblin'. And you're right, it was definitely a very well written cast. Thought it was balanced very well, and each of the characters were tons of fun to read, and also write with! A wonderful experience, for sure!

Fantastic! Obviously I know nothing of the concept and the premise, but I'm a sucker for good quality fantasy stories, animal fables, and those are some mighty fine influences you've got. So, follow-up question! What is it about those three series that has inspired you so much?

Good question!! There are two big reasons why those series in particular were so influential for me:

The first is because of the wonderful character development in all three. Reading about Frodo and Sam on their tumultuous quest to Mount Doom, Matthias and his journey on becoming a warrior of Redwall, the Pevensies and their numerous escapades into Narnia. It's to very easy to feel connected to a character when you get to watch them grow and change throughout the story. For me this could also tie in with the importance of character's relationships with one another. One of my favorite instances of this is the friendship between Frodo & Sam.

And for the second, it's the world building. Each of them had massive worlds with rich histories. Redwall would not be nearly as memorable without unforgettable locations! Salamandastron, Brockhall, Loamhedge, the Quarry, Saint Ninian's, Terramort, Redwall Abbey, Noonvale, etc... To me it was always enjoyable watching the newer generations of Mossflower discovering places old and familiar to the reader. And did you know that Tolkien created the languages and the world of Middle-Earth itself long before even writing the story of LOTR? The story and characters themselves were conceived many years later down the road. I always thought that was really interesting!
