Redwall's Legacy has been around since 2007. It is a forum such as this, with boards for discussing Redwall, or just anything in particular in the off topic section, and boards for RolePlaying.

Right now we have a few contests going, along side out monthly 'member of the month' and the new 'post of the month' we also have a writing contest going and will soon have our own survivor contest in full swing.
Or if contests aren't your thing, you can just stop by any say a hello, and chat with fellow Redwall fans.

Website updates are rolling out, along with a new theme that better suits the writing aspect of the forum, and a auto-refreshing chatroom if you want to make quick chat with other members. We will be adding a proper gallery to the site to showcase any art that members wish to add, as well as a fan-fiction section where members can post their stories. We are also working on starting a monthly e-zine (electronic magazine) for members who wish to know the news about the forum and of current Redwall news.

We are currently looking for new and active members to join our family. Won't you please stop by for a peek, and maybe stay for come candied nuts or some scones, or maybe even some ale in our tavern.

You can visit us at any time, our gates are always open.

Hi Kiara!! I'm so glad you stopped by! I noticed you guys are planning to have a full blown survivor contest at some point. Do you think our sites could work together? I'm sure once Redwall Odyssey has run its course a few of us would be willing to take a gander at Redwall Legacy's contest offering. Were you planning on submitting an application? You should! It would be super fun to write with you!
And then he DIED!!!

Kiara

Sure, we'd love to work with you (and not against. lol)

The survivor contest is still getting planned out at the moment at Redwall's Legacy, so just keep us updated on the progress of the survivor contest here.

But in the mean-time, there is still tons to do and talk about at Redwall's Legacy if any member wants to take a peek.  :)

Sycamore

That's true, Legacy is a full blown roleplay that would be a great place to spend time in the interim of judging or waiting for posts from contestants. That was where I rebooted Sandrose, my very first Survivor character, although her first thread kind of fizzled out and I haven't had the time to start a new one (I don't think I'd continue the thread. T'was a long time ago... Better to just start over.)

But yeah! I'll keep you updated as to the progress of Odyssey, and then I'm sure a good number of us would like to apply for Legacy's contest. Better to keep the contests running at separate times, though, to maximize participation in both.

Were you planning on applying for Odyssey?? You never answered and I have to knooow!
And then he DIED!!!

Kiara

I answered the question in the PM I sent you. haha :P

And yes, running at separate times will optimize both contests. :)

Love to see ya's there. Can't wait!

    Hey, Sycamore!
I've got our Survivor mostly set up. Approximately when will your Survivor be done? I tentatively put down Sept 8th as our starting date, but I don't want to formally announce it until I know for sure that we won't overlap.
Also, a quick question about the contest: How do you guys manage to get this kind of synergy? I don't understand how the posting works, but it seems to there must be some level of auto-paying going on. What is the method you use to construct the entries?

Also, could you give THIS a quick read and see if there is anything thing that is obviously broken? Having never done this before, I don't know what problems to expect.

When you say that posts will be "rewritten"...are the contestants then not actually doing the writing in this? Usually they do. There's usually a hidden contestant board set up for plotting and sharing posts before going up for the audience. It's always been sort of a given that the authors need to do the bulk of the editing themselves, but contestants and the admin (sometimes) help out, because a fresh set of eyes is usually best for catching little errors. There's never been a moderator in charge of editing and writing before, but if it works for you, it works. Might want to expand on what the categories entail, as well. What is a mentor in the context of this story? Is there a predetermined plot, or will the contestants just be winging it?

I can't speak for Balmafula as to when MO will be done, but at its current rate, I would say sometime mid September would be a fairly safe bet. I wouldn't recommend overlapping them much at all, especially if you're looking to get some participants from these forums. If you're just kind of doing your own thing though, you could start whenever.

(Sorry for butting in, but I felt qualified enough to respond. XP)

Just one comment on your voting system - I think the current system (vote for the character you want out) has been kept because there are generally not very many readers.  If everyone is voting for their favorite character, there could very well be 8 votes for 8 different characters in week one - leaving a tie for the two unvoted for.  Or, those same 8 votes could go to 2 different characters, leaving an 8-way tie.

If you have a guaranteed large readership, then you can probably ignore this; but otherwise, it might be worth your time to reconsider your voting system.

EDIT:  Also, a note on the moderator publicly posting the story.  This seems a tad unfair to me because, even with changing points of view, it could be difficult to discern who is writing what post.  This could lead to writers who are NOT the weakest being voted out early simply because their character is poorly represented by other authors.  ...If that makes any sense.  Darn.  It does in my head.

Thank you, TNT. Yes, I do appreciate the feedback ;)
Yes, it's a predetermined premise (I'll make that more clear in the Overview). When the Prologue is presented, the different roles will become clear.

Whisper- As for the voting, that is also a good point. I'll make that edit.

As for editing, I am honestly clueless. I haven't figured out anything that would really work other than your average role-play model. What exact method do you use to for posting entries? Is each entry written by a single person, but they are limited to one post per week? If so, then how do the various characters interact? Or is there Auto-playing involved? Or no interaction at all? Why is there only one post in each thread, as opposed to having all the entries in the same thread?

I guess you could say that there is autoplaying, but mostly everyone just collaborates.  Say I'm playing a character and I will have my character interacting with three other players in my post; when I write my post, I will probably put up kind of a skeleton version of how I want the other players to act, and then run it by their respective authors to make sure that everything is in character.  I personally tend to ask other authors to write their own dialogue for me as well, but that's mainly because I don't trust myself to be able to portray their characters well.

There is usually not a limit on how many posts you can write per week, though I've written in several contests where you had to have at least two posts by other authors in between two of your own posts.  Most people don't do more than three at the most, as it takes some time and work to make a high-quality post.  It's a lot more time consuming than just role playing.

And as for not posting in one thread, that's probably something admins could answer better for you.  My guess is that it's neater and sometimes when threads get super long, they tend to get a little glitchy?  Or something like that.

Sethorion

I've made the changes to the contest, following your advice. Thanks for the feedback!

I've posted the prologue Here so people can have a look-see.

So it's essentially Hunger Games meets Redwall? That could be fun. The only other thing I would suggest is to maybe think about pushing back the application date a bit more, and wait until closer to the end of Mossflower Odyssey to announce it publicly, like the last week or somesuch. These authors have worked hard to get in and to write a great story together, and it'd just be a shame to see all the focus (and audience) shift to a new contest before they're done writing. On the other hand, there has been a lot of stalling in the current contest so far, so setting a firm date now might be a good kick in the tail for the authors. ^^

I went ahead and re-scheduled the application deadline for October 6th (so that your writers could join in).

Sethorion

Was this still going to be possible?

I'd say...a little unlikely? Week six ends on October 7th, and there's one more week after that and then final voting. The way things have generally worked best for contests is to wait until the final voting, then make the deadline for the next contest a couple of weeks after that. Because the authors these days are generally adults with lives outside the ROC, situations arise and extensions sometimes happen (well, not as much when an ol' killjoy like me is in charge of deadlines, mwah), so while you can plan for a basic time of year for the next contest to happen, you can't plan much more than that. Definitely don't make the deadline right at or right after final voting, though. You need to make sure you give people some time to transition from one contest to the next, and to think about application ideas and such. And you need to give yourself time to advertise like mad for it.

Also, I would suggest the best way to learn how contests work is to follow the current one a lot more closely. I've noticed you've only been popping in occasionally, and never spoken up in any board other than this one. I would highly suggest checking out the discussion board for the current contest at the very least.

EDIT: Also, might want to check out this thread for some feedback on the strict PG rating. I realize such a rating might be out of your control based on the site where the contest is hosted, but still. Food for thought! :)
