My bad - you're right. The one in the movie is nothing like the one in the myth, but there IS a character of that name.

Sorry, and thanks for the correction!

Nah, Simon was the herbalist. Saxus became the Abbot.

*raises a nerdy paw*

Er, I believe his name was SimEon, actually...

Balmafula makes an excellent point with the whole Martin thing, actually. I think that certain people names are totally acceptable, as long as they're not so human as to be ridiculous. ("Eugene" is right out.) But giving them a people-ish last name as well, to me, kind of seems like a cop-out.

Bugger it all, you're right. The nerdy paw rules all!
Actually, I think that the general rule for "people" names is that pretty much everything Old English is acceptable, as well as a few things from the Bible.

Dozystoat

Simeon bothers me. 's why I refuse to acknowledge that it's not Simon. XD

I just keep thinking of Diddy Kong when I hear it.

Balmafula

Grah!  And here I've always just called him Simon.  My childhood is a lie!

Just like the cake...

*long, low groan*

I see what you did there.

It's a punderful life indeed...
Pre-emptively cheering on the following top nine names: Cyrus, Whiver Bean, Greenfang, Elin Sarkozy, Deadtail, Hazenval, Eliza Lacrimosa, Damask the Minstrel, and Alethia.

Um. My other app didn't have ANYTHING in the "your app, make sure you've read it carefully" section. 0_0 Tara (or any judge), what should I do?

QuoteI now want to listen to Weylon Jennings.

Yes, that's what I thought when I read the name too, Cricket! ;D

There are some very simple names in the book, so I don't believing picking on a character based on a 'human' name is very sporting.
Or, for that matter, any judgment due to a character's name is bad form.

Jess Squirrel? Mathias? Martin? Constance? Mister Squirrel?! Sam the squirrel. Sela! Mortimer. Basil! Julian. Alf...

Those are all from the first book, which, albeit, does require some tiny wee imagination to make it flow with the other novels in the Redwall series, but regardless contained characters with simple names that weren't exuberantly...animal? Feral? Call it what you will.

...though some of those contestant names are weeeeeird...

Question!

Do Redwall RP character names have to conform to the same/similar standards?

*I only ask because I got some characters with 'funny' sounding names.

Naaaaah.

...is my response to that.

I'll spare everyone my references. :D

Dozystoat

Ddepends where you're gonna be RPing them, I'd say. I've had, among many, many others ...

Seige Cielciosk
Keinruf Wright
Castrigg Waters
Miles Mistoffelees
Blaine "Blinky" Hinkly
(all vermin)

But the VI is really lax about naming. Anything goes, there. In fact, Blaine is the only character on perhaps the entire site that conforms to the Greenhawk style of naming; by their explanation, Bootbrain's real name was Brian Boot.

Black Arch Fort, the only goodbeast place I've been to in the past 5 years, also let's you roll with strange names or very human ones. *shrug*

I guess the thing about these contests is, people expect more canon naming conventions, because it's not just some people fluffing about with random characters that you don't care about if you don't want to - you're writing a story that's going to be read by possibly dozens of people, people who want to care ... And it's hard to care about someone if you think their name is silly and unbefitting the setting.

... so Foxy's reply is very apt indeed. XD

Magical Fish

Meh. I much prefer "people" names to some of the more creative "animal" names out there. They're easier to pronounce and, as has been pointed out, perfectly canon. One of my favourite things about Midnight Mossflower was that the servant NPCs all had normal names (Jeremy, Agatha, Gregory, etc.).

To reiterate what Dozystoat just said, I know one shouldn't judge based on a name, but would you honestly be able to like, say, a mousemaid named Princess Rainbow of Sparkly Woods? In any context?

Princess Rainbow of the Sparkly Wood
Female
Mouse

"Goodness, such fine apples! Yes, these will be a more than acceptable trade. In fact, I think I'll have to throw in some of my blueberry crumble or I'll feel like I'm cheating you, dear."

Bow's heart sank in her throat. "Oh Mistress Thornback, you don't have to do that..."

"Nonsense! Off you go then!"

The boisterous hedgehog deftly snuck a package between the hands the mousemaid had used to cover her basket. Bow sighed. There was no helping it. It was just... She didn't need charity! They were doing just fine! They were!

"Thank you, Mistress Thornback."

Outside the shop an aged female mouse squatted, drawing pictures in the dirt with one paw, showing every every evidence of enjoyment. The strings on her apron had come undone and, for no apparent reason, she had a twig stuck in the fur behind her head.  As Bow paused, the older mouse rocked back on her haunches and raised one filthy hand, as if to stick it in her mouth.

"Momma no!" Bow cried.

Bow lunged forward and caught the paw right before it entered the older mouse's mouth. Her captive scrunched up her face in a rebellious pout and fought her grip with surprising strength.  A dry, creaky, wail issued from her mouth.

Bow grabbed the mouse's other paw and knelt before her.

"Momma. Momma, calm down. Momma, it's alright. It's me."

The elder mouse's eyes were closed.

Bow gulped. Several passerby had stopped to watch. Some were coming closer, as if to interfere. It couldn't be helped. I will not cry in front of these people!

She forced a smile onto her face. "Momma, it's me. Princess Rainbow."

The older mouse opened her eyes, distrust written across her features. Then, all at once, the tension drained away.

"Oh Princess..."

Bow helped the other mouse to her feet, ignoring the shocked and curious stares around her.

"Come on, Momma, time to go home."

(Forgive my SPAG, I did this quickly because I couldn't help myself!)

Eh, I'm only commenting on names because I lack a Top 30 to shred to pieces. I won't actually hate anybody who gets in based on names. Lemme see...I've had a mix of common and odd stuff in my time:

- Lalilly-Calthena-Sophia Turnup
- Alam "Llama" Oakback
- Teresa Acapella Doxtrod-Lancaster
- Mihndle Rhubarb Hensdown
- Comm
- Cypress
- Cricket Argyll
- Adrian Beaumont Nice
- Stumpy

List goes on, though I've noticed now that I seem to be drawn more "normal" and canon-y names for my own, as well as, others' characters.
